The University of the Western Cape Library Services’ vision is to be a strategic partner recognised for excellence in innovative and relevant library services. The Library’s mission is to enrich the learning, teaching and research experience by providing relevant resources and expertise to enable academic success.
The primary role of the Library Assistant is to assist in library learning, teaching and research activities, particularly those related to open science, special collections, virtual reference and user services.
The key performance areas include the following:
- Perform library client services and duties i.e. Circulation; Short loans; ILL etc.
- Conduct basic catalogue & databases searches
- Provide support to open science related activities
- Perform virtual & in-person reference functions
- Assist with collection maintenance and donations i.e. create inventories
- Assist and participate in library projects.
Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)
- Grade 12 certificate at NQF Leve 4 or an Equivalent Qualification
- Two years’ working experience in a library setting
- Exposure to open science and research services/activities
Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrable knowledge of library management system
- Sound understanding of library operations
- Knowledge of library systems - catalogue and databases
- Ability to work in a team as well as independently
- Experience working with cloud storage & sharing applications
- Attention to detail
- Customer oriented
