Purpose of the role

The blockman plays a key role in day-to- day operations of the business. The purpose of the blockman is to ensure meats are cut into correct and custom portions. As a Blockman you will provide quality standard meat under hygienic conditions and maximizing selling opportunities and minimizing risk to the business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Keep counters clean, neat, and presentable.
  • Ensure counters are packed to desired levels, eye catching and appetizing for customers.
  • Wrap, weigh, label and price cuts of meat.
  • Understand different cuts and meat eg. Hindquarters, forequarters, and Lamb etc.
  • Cut meats into primal and to specification.
  • Mark products, workpieces, and equipment with identifying information.
  • Listen carefully to the customer requirements to avoid cancellations.
  • Ensure left-over meat is vacuumed.
  • Define and trimming of different cuts.
  • Store meat at the correct place, watch stock levels and replenish when required.
  • Adhere to FIFO (First IN First OUT) principle to reduce losses for the business.
  • Follow company health and safety procedures and standards.
  • Conduct monthly stock take.
  • Assist other departments when required.
  • Ad hoc tasks as assigned by the manager.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • A valid Matric Certificate.
  • Customer Focused
  • Excellent communication skills, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Sober habits- working with dangerous equipment and sharp objects.
  • Accurate and attention to detail.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • Able to work in a team.
  • Physically fit.
