The Role
We are seeking STEM individuals keen to make a real impact in the delivery of Innovation Science and Technology (IS&T) Programs. You will have the opportunity to use both your science and technology expertise and your project management knowledge to lead some of the most interesting Programs supporting the Defence of Australia. There are a number of positions available across a range of program areas.

The Deputy Program Leader (DPL) will be responsible to the respective Program Leader, and will work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, to successfully lead the coordination and management of a program/project.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Contributing to the development of an IS&T Program Strategy.
  • Creating the IS&T Program’s delivery plans by consulting with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Applying your science and technology expertise to contribute to the design of research activities that address priority problems of strategic importance to Defence which may span several scientific disciplines/domains.
  • Working across teams to define the Program’s milestones, resources, risks and associated projects and work packages.
  • Monitoring, and reporting on the Program’s delivery, risks, governance, communications, budget and benefits realised.
  • Identifying and resolving issues as they arise to ensure quality IS&T outcomes are achieved to time and budget.
  • Acquiring support for successful delivery of Program projects and work-packages (this includes: governance, assurance, legal, security, ICT, and safety).
  • Identifying and negotiating suitable technology transition pathways to help drive innovation.
  • Maintaining and fostering partnerships with clients, academia, and other organisations nationally and internationally.

We have a number of Deputy Program Leader (DPL) roles currently available across the Cyber, Intelligence, National Security and Space IS&T programs. Therefore, we are seeking individuals with strong IS&T leadership skills, relevant science & technology expertise and project management experience to apply.
Cyber, Intelligence, National Security and Space IS&T Programs lead the delivery of innovation and science and technology that specifically support our nation’s Defence intelligence, Joint Capabilities and Joint Operations.

The Cyber, Intelligence, National Security and Space IS&T Programs work with Senior Defence colleagues to determine the most important issues that Defence needs to resolve with IS&T - both now and in the future.

Each Program addresses the IS&T needs of Defence clients such as Joint Capability Group (JCG), Defence Intelligence Group (DIG) and the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) and operates across other Government Departments to understand the needs and develop IS&T Strategies and Plans with stakeholders. As a Deputy Program Leader you will need to engage broadly, in order to commission and coordinate research and development activities to address stakeholder needs and deliver IS&T output, supporting stakeholders to gain the outcomes they need in building national defence capability.

Cyber, Intelligence, National Security and Space IS&T Programs/Projects focus on the following areas:
  • Security resilience
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Quantum
  • Intelligence
  • Cyber
  • Joint electronic warfare
  • Space systems

The division also supports the following Science, Technology and Research (STAR) Shots:
  • Agile Command and Control
  • Information Warfare
  • Resilient Multi Mission Space

Note: All positions will require a Positive Vetting Security Clearance. Candidates may be able to commence with a lower security clearance, however, will need to be able to obtain and maintain a Positive Vetting Clearance following commencement.

A merit pool will be created from the list of suitable applicants. This merit pool will be used to fill current vacancies and future positions in the event a position becomes vacant within the 18 months from gazettal date of this position.

Due to the Christmas stand down period, the assessment process is likely to occur in early 2024.
